Practical Advice to kick Habitual Sin

Many, many folks fight with habitual sin on a daily basis. The defeat they feel typically drives them away from the Lord, leaving them to question God and their faith. For many years I too battled habitual sins and deeply ingrained patterns of sinful thought, questioning my salvation in the process. (And rightly so – see Philippians 2:12-13 and 2 Peter 1:10-11.) Well, as it turns out, defeating sin was actually pretty simple once I discovered how!!

The secret? Refuse to retreat from God in guilt, and instead run to God when you fail. In fact, run to Him when you succeed as well. Heck, just run to Him, period. When you wake up, during the day, in the evening, alone, with family & friends – just run to Him!

There really was nothing magical about eliminating habitual sins from my life. Once I resolved to spend time with God daily, primarily by beginning each day with an hour or so of Bible reading and prayer, I realized He was with me the rest of the day as well, and I could say the desire to think/do sin gradually faded away, or I could say that God reached into my life and removed it. Either way, I now walk closely with Him everyday, my life having been totally transformed. Amen? Amen!

So let today be the day you begin to form a new habit – run to God! They say it takes around 30 days to form a habit, so resolve for 30 days to run to God every morning, and see how your life begins to change!

The song whose lyrics are below inspired this blog. God’s grace to you today and every day!

I Keep On Running (by The Kry)

Been through the fire
Through the pouring rain
A true desire
A Holy flame
From the morning light
To the midnight sun
Not gonna give up
Till the race is won

Chorus:
I keep on running
And i keep on running
Running to You

Some will stand
Some will fall
Down by the way side
Some leave the call
I won’t turn my back
Nor turn away
My eyes on Jesus
’till my dying day

Repeat chorus

When life is over
If i endure
Don’t run for nothing
My hope is sure
If i don’t loose heart
I don’t loose faith
Not gonna slow down!
Till i see His face

Repeat chorus

On and on and on
I keep on running
On and on and on
I keep on running

Where exactly does God live?

So where exactly does God live?

In Matthew chapter 6, the Lord is instructing His disciples on the right way to conduct themselves before men and before God. In verse 9, He instructs them on the way to pray which we know as the Lord’s prayer. The verse begins with,

“After this manner therefore pray ye:
‘Our Father, which art in heaven, …’ ”
Matthew 6:9a (KJV)

or in modern day English,

“This, then, is how you should pray:
‘Our Father in heaven, …’ ”
Matthew 6:9a (NIV)

Yet God declared to his prophet Jeremiah,

” ‘Do not I fill heaven and earth?’
declares the Lord.”
Jeremiah 23:24b (NIV)

Seems a little contradictory to me. Does God really dwell in heaven, or is he presently filling both heaven and earth? How big is heaven? Does it include the entire universe?

Seriously, most people still seem to regard God as separated from mankind (or at least the living ones), even as somewhat aloof and uncaring. Sometimes even the actions of confessing Christians betray a similar belief. But that isn’t the God of the Bible at all!

After giving the Israelite people the law, God instructed Moses:

And let them make me a sanctuary, that I may dwell in their midst.
Exodus 25:8 (KJV)

Though he had already been accompanying them on their journey from Egypt, he chose to actually take up residence with them, by dwelling in the tabernacle (tent). What kind of strange and marvelous Divine Being chooses to do this??? And yet, God had even more in mind than that!

As if to seal his relationship with the Jewish people in matrimony, he had the temple constructed, a permanent place of residence in which to move, just as a husband and wife build a house together in which to share life. But still, he had more in mind! Particularly considering that he allowed that precious temple to be destroyed, not once, but twice, even using the term “divorce” to refer to his failing marriage. (see Jeremiah 3:8)

But then Jesus entered the world, and God had arrived in Person, as an infant human, naked, powerless, and vulnerable, that is, in the greatest humility! Called Emmanuel (see Matthew 1:23), his very name meant “God with us”. Here was God in physical presence!! And yet, God still had more in mind!

Emmanuel grew up and established a beautiful ministry to the poor and needy, as we would expect God to do. Yet eventually his earthly ministry concluded, and he returned to the Father. But the climax of the story of God’s dwelling place with man still had not yet occurred. This story actually climaxed at Pentecost (see Acts 2:1-4), when God first took up residence directly within his people, making them (and us) his new temple!! Yes, he refers to the church as a whole as his temple! (see Ephesians 2:21-22) That’s people he’s livin’ in!!

Actually, when we realize that God seeks to live within individual human beings, we realize that the story of God’s dwelling place climaxes every single time a new heart is opened to his habitation! That the God who fills heaven and earth has chosen to make his home within us should endlessly fill us with awe and wonder, joy and amazement! I know it does me, at least at this stage in my life! Hallelujah indeed!!!!!

Welcome Mike – Our newest Blogger

It is with great pleasure that I can announce that my good friend Mike will be blogging here at DAT Ministries. Mike is a strong Christian man and along with his wife, Laura, they have raised a fine family. He knows the Word in a very intimate way and can relate the Scriptures to others in down-to-earth writings that is easily understood by all. Mike is sure to be one of the favorite bloggers with our visitors.

Mike and I first met at a Christian blogging website called myChurch almost 15 years ago. That website no longer exists as we knew it and the domain (the Internet address) is under new ownership and the site has been re-purposed from the original owners’ design. A lot of people, and they had a membership list of 100,000 plus, were saddened by the loss of that website for blogging as we knew it. Mike and I have stayed in touch with some of the bloggers through the years on Facebook and other social media websites. What most of us have not done during those years is blog. Until now.

Within the next few days, Mike will begin blogging here with a combination of blogs posted over 10 years ago that were in their own rights classics along with newly minted blogs. The blogs from yesteryear are every bit as relevant today as they were then. Some are even prophetic. I know that the visitors to DAT Ministries will enjoy reading all of Mike’s blogs. The blogs that are republished will have the original publish date as part of the blog.

So please join with me in welcoming Mike to blogging on this website. In the future, Mike may also be blogging on his own website as well and we encourage him to do just that. He is such a gifted blogger that we at DAT Ministries in no way want to hold him back. Perhaps we will have the good fortune to have Mike publish his blogs on both websites when that day arrives. And note that I said when; not if. I believe that God has already ordained Mike to blog. I just hope that Mike will keep on blogging for a long time to come. You may not know this but I do; we ALL need Mike’s blogs to help us grow in Christ.
