The Rich Man & Lazarus
(Part 1 of 3)

Today I want to look at the story of the Rich Man and Lazarus as we read in Luke 16:19-31. But I am going to do the lesson in multiple parts. In the first part, we will read up through verse 23. I will cover the remaining parts, verses 24 through 31, over the next two weeks.

Let’s read the first section and discuss the verses as we read them. In some versions of the Bible, the Rich Man is given the name “Dives” which is Latin for “rich man.” Also, Lazarus is not the same Lazarus that Jesus raised from the dead (see John 11:43-44). It is also believed that this is not a parable but rather a factual account. Scholars believe this is true because Jesus never uses a given name in His parables for the characters as He did Lazarus here.

In verses 19 and 20, we see that Lazarus is a poor man stricken with sores; open and ulcerated wounds that were oozing bodily fluids that the dogs were licking. Now Lazarus longed to eat even the crumbs that fell from the Rich Man’s table. The rich man lived the life of the upper class living a flamboyant lifestyle and dressed in the finest clothes.

In verse 22, both men die. Angels carry Lazarus to Abraham’s side or bosom (depending on your translation) and the rich man is buried. From the Talmud, the Jewish documents that establish Jewish theology and religious law, we know that Abraham’s bosom is where the righteous dead await vindication before the final judgement. In verse 23, we learn that the rich man was in Hades or hell (depending on your translation) and suffering great distress. He was able to see Abraham and Lazarus although they were far away.

It should be noted in the original Greek manuscripts, that the word translated “hell” in the King James Version is actually hádê which is obviously Hades. You see, Hades is where the wicked dead await final judgement before being tossed into the lake of fire (see Revelation 19:20 and Revelation 20:10-15) or hell. Hell is the final place of torment for those whose name was not found in the Book of Life.

To recap and reading from the Amplified Bible, we have thus far:

19 There was a certain rich man who [habitually] clothed himself in purple and fine linen and reveled and feasted and made merry in splendor every day.
20 And at his gate there was [carelessly] dropped down and left a certain utterly destitute man named Lazarus, [reduced to begging alms and] covered with [ulcerated] sores.
21 He [eagerly] desired to be satisfied with what fell from the rich man’s table; moreover, the dogs even came and licked his sores.
22 And it occurred that the man [reduced to] begging died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried.
23 And in Hades (the realm of the dead), being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far away, and Lazarus in his bosom.

Luke 16:19-23 (AMP)

Next Sunday, we will look closely at verses 24 through 26. There are some word studies that need investigation so that we fully understand these graphic verses. You will not want to miss next week’s Sunday’s Knowledge Nugget #005.

That will be a wrap for today. You all have been great. I especially appreciate the eMails from folks that either let me know how this ministry has helped them or sent me ideas on content that I could publish. With that, I leave you by speaking this blessing over you:

I pray that the Lord
will bless and protect you,
and that he will show you mercy
and kindness.
May the Lord be good to you
and give you peace.

Welcome Mike – Our newest Blogger

It is with great pleasure that I can announce that my good friend Mike will be blogging here at DAT Ministries. Mike is a strong Christian man and along with his wife, Laura, they have raised a fine family. He knows the Word in a very intimate way and can relate the Scriptures to others in down-to-earth writings that is easily understood by all. Mike is sure to be one of the favorite bloggers with our visitors.

Mike and I first met at a Christian blogging website called myChurch almost 15 years ago. That website no longer exists as we knew it and the domain (the Internet address) is under new ownership and the site has been re-purposed from the original owners’ design. A lot of people, and they had a membership list of 100,000 plus, were saddened by the loss of that website for blogging as we knew it. Mike and I have stayed in touch with some of the bloggers through the years on Facebook and other social media websites. What most of us have not done during those years is blog. Until now.

Within the next few days, Mike will begin blogging here with a combination of blogs posted over 10 years ago that were in their own rights classics along with newly minted blogs. The blogs from yesteryear are every bit as relevant today as they were then. Some are even prophetic. I know that the visitors to DAT Ministries will enjoy reading all of Mike’s blogs. The blogs that are republished will have the original publish date as part of the blog.

So please join with me in welcoming Mike to blogging on this website. In the future, Mike may also be blogging on his own website as well and we encourage him to do just that. He is such a gifted blogger that we at DAT Ministries in no way want to hold him back. Perhaps we will have the good fortune to have Mike publish his blogs on both websites when that day arrives. And note that I said when; not if. I believe that God has already ordained Mike to blog. I just hope that Mike will keep on blogging for a long time to come. You may not know this but I do; we ALL need Mike’s blogs to help us grow in Christ.

Their Just Reward…

You have probably heard your friend say  “They will receive their just reward” if the person that your friend is speaking of has just wronged another individual; either directly or indirectly. You see, God is our vindicator.

O God, my vindicator!
Answer me when I call!
When I was distressed, you set me free;
now have mercy on me, and hear my prayer.
Psalms 4:1 (CJB)

Yes, it is God whom we should turn our troubles over to. We should not attempt to solve them by our own strength. That is almost certainly doomed for failure. Listen to this prophetic utterance:

All who do evil are shameless,
but the Lord does right
and is always fair.
With the dawn of each day,
God brings about justice.
Zephaniah 3:5 (CEV)

Now isn’t that the truth? Those who go about doing evil, regardless of what wrong they are doing, they act without remorse or shame. But have comfort that the Lord is sometimes fair. No, not sometimes, always! The Lord our God has been, is now and will always be fair! Thank you Jesus! What God is saying in this verse is that no matter what evil came upon you yesterday, today is a new day and God is working out justice for you. Take a look at this verse from two similar translations:

In the evening Israel waits in terror,
but by dawn its enemies are dead.
This is the just reward of those who plunder us,
a fitting end for those who destroy us.
Isaiah 17:14 (NLT)

In the evening Israel waits in terror, but by dawn her enemies are dead. This is the just reward of those who plunder and destroy the people of God.
Isaiah 17:14 (TLB)

Israel, of course, is us. The good guys. At the end of the day, we are fraught with shattered nerves over what we have been through that day. Been there, done that! We lie awake in bed trying to go to sleep but worrying about what tomorrow will bring as a result of whatever happened earlier in the day. But how many times have you woken up the next day to find out that the problem you were worrying so much about the night before simply went away? That is God giving your problem, the enemy, their just reward. It simply vanished. Thank you Jesus!

Yes, God knows how to give your adversary their just reward. You may not see it come to pass but know in your heart that it either already did or will come to pass in the future. They will receive their just reward!

That will be a wrap for today. You all have been great. I especially appreciate the eMails from folks that either let me know how this ministry has helped them or sent me ideas on content that I could publish. With that, I leave you by speaking this blessing over you:

I pray that the Lord
